Generation: 2

  1. 2.  John Tarplay FordJohn Tarplay Ford was born on 7 Feb 1856 (son of Joel Tarplay Ford and Elizabeth B. Pickett); died on 23 Jul 1902 in Thomasville, AL; was buried in Methodist Cemetery, Choctaw Corner, AL.

    Notes:

from Edwin Ford: John Tarplay came to Thomasville/Choctaw Corner to teach school but ended up keeping books for people. Had problems with alcohol. May have presented himself as being older than he actually was--cemetery marker says 1854, as written by his widow, but census suggests his actual birth may have been 1856.

    Birth:
Edwin Ford: His tombstone lists 1854 as his date of birth, but the 1870 census lists him as 14 years old.

John married Stella Melissa Curtis. Stella (daughter of Dr James H. Curtis and Lucy M. Giles) was born on 29 Aug 1861; died on 2 Feb 1938 in Thomasville,Alabama. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Stella Melissa CurtisStella Melissa Curtis was born on 29 Aug 1861 (daughter of Dr James H. Curtis and Lucy M. Giles); died on 2 Feb 1938 in Thomasville,Alabama.

    Notes:

from Edwin Ford: Stella Curtis had 10 pregnancies, five of whom lived to adulthood. Some of her descendants are RH negative; maybe Stella was as well, and that caused the high infant mortality rate.

    Children:
    1. Lucy Ford
    2. Edna Ford was born in c1879.
    3. 1. Johnnie Huey Ford, Sr was born on 8 Sep 1891 in Choctaw Corners, AL; died on 22 Sep 1967 in Selma, AL; was buried in Thomasville, AL.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Joel Tarplay Ford

Joel married Elizabeth B. Pickett. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Elizabeth B. Pickett

    Notes:

    Name:
Edwin Ford: either Pickett or Prickett

    Notes:

from Edwin Ford: 1840 census shows Joel and Elizabeth in NC; 1850 census shows them with children in Natchitoches Parish, LA; 1860 census shows them in Mobile without two oldest children; 1870 census shows Elizabeth only in Choctaw Corner, AL, with her youngest son, age 14. They had six children altogether: the two who presumably stayed in Louisiana, one who was killed in the Civil War; Harrison who was injured but survived, Cassandra who was the second-youngest, and John who was the youngest.

    Children:
    1. Ethel Ford was buried in Methodist Cemetery, Choctaw Corner, AL.
    2. Harrison Ford
    3. Cassandra Ford
    4. 2. John Tarplay Ford was born on 7 Feb 1856; died on 23 Jul 1902 in Thomasville, AL; was buried in Methodist Cemetery, Choctaw Corner, AL.

  3. 6.  Dr James H. CurtisDr James H. Curtis was born in 1825 (son of Daniel Curtis); died in 1863.

    Notes:

Lucy Giles was his third wife, and he had two previous children.

    Birth:
Edwin Ford: He was 35 when he married Lucy Giles in 1860.

    Died:
Edwin Ford: Grandmother (Stella Curtis) was told about his coming home from New Orleans, and her mother (Lucy Giles) saw him hunched over on his horse, and he didn't live very long after that. He became infected with some kind of fever or something and made it home but didn't live very long after he got there. Could have been 64 instead of 63, but I don't know.

James married Lucy M. Giles in 1860 in Marengo County, AL. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Lucy M. GilesLucy M. Giles

    Notes:

Edwin Ford: Lucy Giles came to Shiloh, AL (Marengo Co) to teach school, supposedly. Lived with a family named Hosea. She was from Laurel, DE, probably born there. Had a brother than never married, who ran a box factory. When he died there was no will, so his estate was divided and Stella Melissa Curtis inherited $2000-3000, 1/76th of the total, a lot of money for the day. Have her copy of the letter announcing the distribution. Came just before the war. Think we have a copy of the marriage license from Marengo County.

    Notes:

Edwin Ford: He was 35 and she was 18 when they were married.

    Children:
    1. 3. Stella Melissa Curtis was born on 29 Aug 1861; died on 2 Feb 1938 in Thomasville,Alabama.
    2. W. Edwin Curtis was born in 1863; died in in Montgomery, AL; was buried in Methodist Cemetery, Choctaw Corner, AL.
