Haynes Kelley: "Uncle Jack--it was kind of funny--Uncle Jack loved to compare bald spots with my dad. It was a big deal. Jack had a bigger bald spot than Daddy did, and so Jack decided he needed a toupee. He was proud of that toupee. It was a part of who he was. It was funny. And I think somewhat of a status symbol. It was important not to be bald, and he could afford a toupee, so he had one."

John married Grace Kathleen Kelley on 20 May 1939. Grace (daughter of Cott Covington Kelley and Sallie Louise Haynes) was born on 22 Jul 1914 in Huntington Park,Los Angles,California; died in 1993 in Birmingham,Alabama; was buried in Elmwood Cemetary,Birmingham,Alabama.
